A GOLD-LACQUER LARGE ROUNDED RECTANGULAR RYOSHIBAKO (DOCUMENT BOX)
Probably late Edo (1615-1868) period, early/mid-19th century
Lavishly decorated predominantly in gold and iro-e takamaki-e, gold togidashi maki-e and e-nashiji with a panoramic autumnal view of an Imperial boating excursion along the Oi River, one boat with mokko-mon (quince flower crest) and the other with togari hanakaku-mon (pointed-square-shaped flower crest), a profusion of pine and maple trees growing in the distance and in the lower foreground, intersected by horizontal bands of clouds, the design extending around the sides of the box, the inside of the inrobuta (flush-fitting lid) embellished in gold takamaki-e with flowering stalks of autumn plants including susuki (plume grass), ominaeshi (valerian), fujibakama (hemp agrimony), hagi (bush clover) and kikyo (Chinese bellflower), on a rich nashiji ground, the rims of silver, the storage box inscribed outside Oigawa maki-e Onryoshibunko (Maki-e document box with the design of Oi River). 14.5cm x 41cm x 33.5cm (5¾in x 16 1/8in x 13¼in).
