A GOLD-LACQUER SUZURIBAKO (BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS)
Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), probably mid-/late 19th century
The kabusebuta (overhanging lid) embellished in gold and silver hiramaki-e, kirikane, gold takamaki-e and e-nashiji with a waterfall and stream cascading through the spring landscape of the rolling hills of Mount Yoshino on which cherry blossoms are in full bloom, permeated by bands of mist, the inside of the cover similarly lavishly lacquered with a mansion shaded by leafy maple trees in full bloom in a mountainous landscape on a hirame sprinkled ground, the meandering Tatsuta river on the right foreground, the leafy maple trees repeated on the interior of the box, fitted with a removable interior tray for containing the suzuri (ink-grinding stone) with fundame-lacquered edges and the silver suiteki (water dropper) cast and carved as a chrysanthemum blossom on a bed of foliage, the underside finished in rich nashiji; unsigned. 4cm x 24.5cm x 23.5cm (1 5/8in x 9 5/8in x 9¼in).
