A GOLD-LACQUERED SMALL SUZURIBAKO (BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS)
Edo period (1615-1868), probably 17th/18th century
The kabusebuta (overhanging lid) decorated in gold takamaki-e, kirikane and gold hiramaki-e with a flock of birds flying towards a thatched shioya (salt evaporation shed) sheltered beneath pines, bundles of brushwood and two wicker baskets resting on the ground at the lower left, the inside of the lid lacquered with a solitary oarsman poling a boat, two jakago (gabions) in the background, the inside of the box decorated with stems of sugina (mare's tail) and fitted with a removable tray and ita (baseboard) for holding the suzuri (ink-grinding stone) and the bronze suiteki (water dropper) with a brocade pouch and plain wood storage box. 3cm x 14.5cm x 13cm (1¼in x 5¾in x 5 1/16in).
