A GREEK GNATHIAN PROCHOUS WITH LION HEAD TERMINALS

Circa 400 BC. A delicate, well detailed vessel known as a prochous, formed in a black-glazed, crafted with a tall bulbous body tapering into shaped spout and long handle behind. Elegantly decorated with ornamental bands of geometric decoration called listati; decorated with a central rosette motif painted in a diamond shape, with bands of dot and scrolling, below the rim, a band of ovolo and meander. Continuing with a band of colour exchanging between red and yellow. Either side of the handle and spout are two terminals with lion heads.
