A GREY SCHIST FIGURAL FRAGMENT WITH A BODHISATTVA WITH A GARLAND
PROPERTY FROM THE MOITA COLLECTION OF GANDHARA ART
Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd - 3rd century
The fragment possibly part of the typical relief panels depicting the Miracle of Saraswati with celestials showering the Buddha with floral garlands, carved with a male attendant in the form of a Bodhisattva, with muscular naked torso, wearing a long beaded necklace and his hair up in a tight bun, holding a large garland, the surface with residues of red pigment, possibly a result of devotional practices, mounted on a later wooden base, 16.5cm x 13cm including the base.
A very clear example of relief with the Miracle of Saraswati as main subject can be seen at the Lahore Museum or published in Philipp von Zabern's publications, Das Buddhistische Erbe Pakistan: Legenden, Kloster und Paradiese, Mainz, 2009.
