China, Republic / Minguo period

- the plaque within its frame:
Notes:
1. “Yān bō diào tú” (烟波钓徒) is a Chinese idiom which describes people who used to live in seclusion in fishing, i.e. who were hermits in fishing. It comes from the biograpy of Zhang Zhihe (張志和), a Chinese government official and Taoist scholar who lived during the 8th century, whom, after having served the Emperor Suzong of the Tang Dynasty as an official, shared in a general pardon, and fled to the woods and mountains and became a wandering recluse, calling himself "the Old Fisherman of the Mists and Waters" (烟波钓叟).
2. Considered as one of the "Eight Friends of Zhushan" a small circle of educated porcelain painters in Jingdezhen during the Republic period, Wang Yeting (1884-1942) is renowned for his landscape paintings, particularly in the style of the four great landscape painters of the Qing dynasty known as the 'Four Wangs': Wang Shimin (1642-1715), Wang Hui (1632-1717), Wang Jian (1598-1677) and Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715). Wang Yeting painted many of his works in the blue-green landscape style, and plaques painted with a snow-caped landscape in the grisaille and white tones, such as the present example, appear to be less common.
