A GROUP OF FOUR MADHUBANI PAINTINGS, THE PROPERTY OF JADE JAGGER

Eastern India, Bihar, second half of the 20th century. Gouache on paper. Each finely painted in radiant pigments. Throughout, the figures are characteristically rendered in profile with large almond-shaped eyes, amid abundant floral motifs and within sawtooth borders.

The first depicts a highly stylized, symmetrical composition dominated by two confronted birds and further zoomorphic motifs amid foliate designs. The second portrays Krishna playing the flute before his beloved Radha, the couple flanked by two female attendants. The third depicts four richly attired female figures. The fourth shows a central couple, traditionally identified as Rama and Sita, exchanging a floral garland and accompanied by two female attendants.

Madhubani painting is a distinctive artistic tradition originating in the Mithila region of India and Nepal, with the Madhubani district of Bihar serving as a principal center of its production. Historically practiced and transmitted across generations primarily by women, rooted in domestic and communal practice, the tradition is closely associated with communities such as Jitwarpur, Ranti, and Rasidpur. Madhubani paintings are distinguished by their intricate geometric patterns, strong linear forms, and richly patterned surfaces. Artists traditionally employ simple implements, including fingers, twigs, brushes, nib pens, and matchsticks, and prepare colors from natural dyes and pigments.

Literature comparison:
