Condition Report:
In overall good condition despite the usual scratches and dents due to use and age. Regilt, rubbing to gilding. Some chips to the gilding. Replacement to the guilloché carved moulding around the upholstery. Two feet with larger losses to the gilding. The underside of the feet with later balls instead of casters

Catalogue Note:
This armchair is likely part of a suite of twelve armchairs and a settee in the drawing room at Paultons, Hampshire, a property owned by descendants of Sir Hans Sloane, the renowned physician and collector, whose collection gave origin to the British Museum and British Library. Traditionally is thought that this suite was in the British Embassy in Paris when the Sloane's grandson, Hans Stanley, was placed as chargé d'affaires. An identical gilt-wood armchair, seemingly part of the same suite, was offered at Christie's New York, The Ann & Gordon Getty Collection, 19 October 2023, lot 218.

Ce fauteuil fait probablement partie d'une suite de douze fauteuils et d'un canapé dans le salon du domaine Paultons, dans le Hampshire, une propriété appartenant aux descendants de Sir Hans Sloane, célèbre médecin et collectionneur, dont la collection est à l'origine du British Museum et de la British Library. Traditionnellement, cette suite se trouvait à l'ambassade britannique à Paris lorsque le petit-fils de Sloane, Hans Stanley,y était diplomate.
