A George II figured walnut chest on stand, circa 1740, the moulded pediment above two short and three long graduated drawers, the stand with two short and one long drawer, above a shaped apron, on tapering cabriole legs surmounted by carved stylised shell motifs at the front, terminating in pad feet, 168cm high, 97cm wide, 58cm deep

Condition Report:
Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some losses. Some old repairs and replacements. Some old worm damage (see additional images) The handles and escutcheons appear original, some of the nuts securing the handle fixtures are associated. All drawer linings and rear panels are original. The legs appear original. There is evidence of re-gluing at the upper joints of the legs and with the ‘ear’ brackets. Two or three of the ‘ear’ brackets at the tops of the legs may be later associated but are well matched to the piece. The uppermost joint of one rear leg has been spliced with later timber (only visible from beneath the chest. The same leg has a section of later timber above it to the side panel of the stand.(See images) Some of the supporting blocks to the underside/ interior of the leg joints are later. The locks to the upper chest section are all later associated, some are ill fitting and some with later fillets of timber adjacent. Lacking keys.
