[ translate ]

A George II mahogany combined tea and card table, probably Irish, circa 1760, the twin hinged rectangular top with outset front corners, opening to a tea table and then a card table incorporating a baize inset surface and counter wells, the shaped frieze above cabriole shaped tapering legs surmounted by stylised fluted terminals and carved acanthus leaves, terminating in pad feet, 72cm high, 79cm wide, 38cm deep

Provenance: Private Collection, Wales

The secret drawer to the rear frieze of this table is an unusual and interesting feature.

For related folding tables displaying related unusual designs of carving, see The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, Yale University Press, 2007, page 237.

Condition Report:
Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. some additional old scratches and indented marks. some old repairs. Minor evidence of old worm mainly only to the rear frieze. Some of the blocks to the underlying frame are possibly old replacements or have been re-glued. The current baize inset (a replacment) is crudely applied, lifting in areas and with fragments of loss. It requires replacement. Some old repairs and minor losses adjacent to the hinges including a larger section of old replacement to one corner of the tea table section. (see images) At the front edge of the top leaf there is an old rectangular replacement. This appears to be adjacent to where the corner of the top was cleanly detached previously. It has been neatly restored but the repair apparent upon close inspection. This has also occurred to other front corners of the tops but has been very neatly repaired. The table is of pleasant compact proportions and constructed from high quality mahogany. The table is a good rich colour overall and has a very good 'heavy' quality to it. There is a secret drawer revealed to the rear frieze when the hinged rear leg is moved.
