A George II silver gilt chatelaine, London circa 1730-60 by M.G in a rectangle (untraced)
Comprising a segmented hook section, with two octagonal hinged boxes suspended from this above an etui case, of tapering elongated rectangular form with canted corners with moulded edges and a domed hinged top. Oval cartouches to either side, one with an engraved coat of arms within a lozenge with foliate mantling, the other side with a complex mirror monogram EI in foliate cursive script. The segmented hook section with finely chased decoration showing a lady at a harpsichord with a dog at her side and a vase of flowers. Marked to reverse of hook only.
Length – 17 cm / 6.7 inches
Weight – 119 grams / 3.83 ozt
The arms are for Isted
Probably for Elizabeth Isted (1704 - 1771) of Ecton, Northamptonshire, who died unmarried. Daughter of Thomas Isted (1677-1732) of St John’s Square, Middlesex and Anne Rose (c. 1679 – c. 1722).
This makers mark would almost certainly have been in the lost register for small workers marks of the 1739 to 1758 period, if it was registered at all. The only comparable mark is an M.G in a oval (Grimwade 3736) which is noted as being on a chased sword hilt dated 1745, with Grimwade noting “?London or possibly foreign”. If this were to be the same maker, it would indicate that two marks versions of their mark were lost or indeed not registered at all.
