A George II silver inkstand.

A George II silver inkstand, the rectangular base with raised shell and scroll border, enclosing an engraved armorial within elaborate scroll surround, and fitted with three mounts supporting two later glass inkwells and a pounce pot, the whole raised upon four foliate scroll feet. Hallmarked Edward Aldridge I, London 1750. Length 12.5" (32 cm), weight of stand only 36.43 ozt (1133 grams).

Condition Report:
- Displaying general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with age and use.

- Many surface nicks and pitting type marks are visible to the top of the inkstand.

- With similar marks and heavier scratches to the undeside.

- The underside with some heavy scraping or file type marks. And heavier contact marks around the screws/nuts.

- Evidence of some previous repairs to the border.

- Further likely repairs around joins of some feet.

- Hallmarked to the underside and these marks in good order.

- The glass pots are later, some minor nibbles and one pot with internal cracks.

- The lids are not hallmarked but test around 94% Ag.

- Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns. Fellows does not guarantee the standard of silver unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.
