A George II walnut and upholstered wing armchair

[ translate ]

A George II walnut and upholstered wing armchair, circa 1740, the arched and shaped back above a loose cushion seat flanked by padded outswept arms, on tapering cabriole legs at the front carved with acanthus terminals and terminating in claw on ball feet and concealed castors, 111cm high, 86cm wide, 72cm deep

Provenance: A country estate, Dumfriesshire

Please note, this chair is not leather upholstered but is upholstered as photographed and viewed.

Condition Report:
Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some losses. Some old repairs. Signs of old worm damage, some causing small fragmentary losses (see images) Some old evidence of later re-gluing to joints of legs. One front leg has a crack to the centre of it (and small old loss at the base of it. see image) and glued to secure, but has not cracked all the way through the leg. Attention from a professional restorer to restore the connection fully is advisable. The castors to the base of the legs are very likely associated and it appears that the base of the feet/ legs have been drilled out in order to accomadate a circular block of timber which the current castors are secured to. (see images) The seat rails appear original. The rear seat rail appears more affected by worm than the other rails and the timber appears fragile in some areas as result. The surface is original. Sympathetic attention by an experienced restorer/ polisher to the surface would further bring the colour to life/ improve the appearance further. The replaced upholstery is in clean and tidy condition overall. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
