A George III Gilt Silver Covered Two-Handled Trophy, London, 1795 Marks: (lion passant), (crowned leopard's head), (duty mark), u, WH 17-3x4 x 12-3x4 x 7 inches (45.1 x 32.4 x 17.8 cm) 2906 grams (93.43 troy ounces) Inscription: A remembrance of the East India Company's Present, to Captn G. Welstead, of four hundred guineas. June 11, 1805. PROVENANCE: Christie's, London, March 17, 1999, lot 91; Collection of Carl DeSantis; Sotheby's, New York, Property from the Collection of Carl DeSantis, November 4, 2011, lot 253. The two-handled trophy with urn-form body encircled on the upper rim by a band of scrolling grapevines, with cast plaques centered on each side, one with the East India Company coat of arms and motto, the opposite with putto in lion-pulled cart, raised on a stepped circular foot with border of berried laurel branch, and two reeded handles terminating in acanthus leaves, the stepped cover with acorn finial and two coat of arms engraved in cartouches. Condition Report: In overall good condition. Slight lean to body overall. Slight lifting to rim of cover; does not sit flush to trophy.
