A George III silver regimental wine funnel, The 1st or Highland Regiment, Edinburgh Local Militia,

by Solomon Hougham, London 1811,

campana form, reeded border, with three ribbed supports, inscribed '1st or Highd Regt. Edinburgh Militia' and 'From Captain Mactavish to the Mess 17 March 1814', length 15.5cm, approx. weight 4.9oz.

Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver.

In the early 19th century there were a number of volunteer corps in addition to the regular Militia of Edinburgh. One of these was the Edinburgh (Royal Highland) Volunteers which has originally formed in 1797. It disbanded in 1802 and reformed in 1803.

Lieutenant Dugald MacTavish was born in 1781. At the age of 22 he secured an appointment as an officer in the Edinburgh (Royal Highland) Volunteers. He left the Militia Regiment in 1814.
