[ translate ]

in the Art Deco style, plain cylindrical, the base and cover each with twisted wire border, the pull-off cover set with a central cabochon malachite and five coral beads 85mm high, 6oz, 186gr This form of cigarette-box or canister was popular with H. G. Murphy in the very late 1920s and into the 1930s. Each of the known examples is cylindrical and with a tight-fitting cover, as with the present example. It was a form which acted as something of a canvas to which Murphy applied ornament or decoration using the various techniques that formed such an important part of his oeuvre. Examples are known with applied geometric ornament and carved ivory or 'gem'-set with Paul Atterbury and John Benjamin illustrating no fewer than six exampes (P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin, Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, pp. 92-93). Another example of 1929, decorated with niello is also known (Sworders, Stanstead Mounfitchet, 25 June 2013, lot 111).
