A German Guard Officer's Sword For The City Militia Of Hamburg, And A Belgian Cavalry Officer's Sword
The Blade Of The First Early 19th Century, The Second 19th Century
The first with curved fullered blade double-edged towards the point, the forte on one side etched and gilt 'Bürger Garde der freÿen Hanse Stadt Hamburg', and on the other with a representation of the city of Hamburg between a martial trophy and a wreath, brass hilt cast and chased with a classical trophy and foliage on each side at the langet, rear quillon with monster-head terminal, knuckle-guard, pommel with a bearded mask on top, and wooden grip (split along one side) chequered over both sides, in its brass scabbard with two rings for suspension (the hilt and scabbard possibly reproduction); the second with slightly curved nickel-plated pipe-back blade double-edged towards the point, the forte on one side with indistinct maker's details, and on the other with indistinct inscription on a scroll, regulation brass hilt cast with laurel, comprising two bars swept up to join the knuckle-guard, pommel-cap, and spirally-grooved wooden grip (wire binding mostly missing), in original nickel-plated steel scabbard (minor loss of finish) with ring for suspension (2)
