A German Silver-Gilt-Mounted Coconut Tankard, Circa 1570-90
the rim engraved with arabesques, the scroll handle with interlaced ribbonwork, the thumbpiece a winged male bust, the finial as a warrior with shield on raised disc, the nut enclosed by three straps with leaf-tips edges, the stepped, domed foot flat-chased with strapwork on stippled ground
marked on front rim with maker’s mark MP conjoined in shaped shield and city mark a lion or griffin rampant looking left in circle
height 10 in.

Condition Report:
One leaf-tip missing from top band enclosing the nut, plain later disc inside cover, finial has lost his spear and his feet resoldered. Strap behind handle loose at top previously lead-soldered, otherwise good, gilding probably original, assay scrapes on foot, inside rim, cover and handle
