A Gold Fanam issued during the reign of Tipu Sultan (reg. 1782-1799)

Coins issued by Tipu Sultan during the first four years of his reign bear the Hijri date where dates are read from left to right as on this coin. During the fifth year of his reign, he introduced Mauludi year in which the dates are written from right to left. The word Mauludi was derived from Maulud-i-Muhammad which took its origin from the birth of Prophet Muhammad. Coins of the first four years of his reign are dated until AH 1200, while coins from the fifth year bear the date from AM 1215. The large letter Ha to the reverse is likely to be an abbreviation for Haydar.
