M.C. London Gazette 26 September 1916:
'For conspicuous gallantry during operations. He displayed great skill and personal courage when in command of the trench mortar batteries. On one occasion he took up two mortars into a position, only part of which was held by us. On another occasion under heavy fire, he took a heavy mortar across the open and brought it into action.'M.I.D. London Gazette 28 December 1918 & 9 July 1919.
Thomas Gerard Brown served in France 14 October 1915 with the 4th Battalion, being made Captain in December 1915. He applied for his Medals on 21 September 1921 and they were sent to 35 Upper Leeson Street, Dublin, Ireland.
Having survived the Great War, he worked as a medical doctor and surgeon in Dublin. In December 1935 while out game shooting with a fellow doctor in Rathconnor bog, County Roscommon, he was shot accidently in the leg by his companion. He died in Roscommon hospital on 4 December and is buried in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Dowdallshill, Dundalk.
His brother John Carolan Brown, M.C. & Bar, was killed in action during the Great War, whilst attached to the Tank Corps and another brother, Henry Joseph Brown, was a skilled hockey player who Captained Ireland to the silver Medal at the 1908 Olympic Games.
