A HARDWOOD FOLDING STOOL, QING DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China, 1644-1912. The rounded X-form legs joined by a central metal pivot, allowing the stool to fold, and supported on elongated feet. The frame is further strengthened with iron fittings and reinforcing mounts, while the upper rails, originally fitted with a flexible seat, are pierced and notched for its attachment.

Provenance: Jorgen Ruben, acquired via the London art market.

Jorgen Ruben is a Danish art dealer and collector who has been active for over four decades and is highly regarded in the fields of Asian art and classical antiquities. Raised in an art-conscious family, Ruben was exposed early to both modern painting and European decorative arts. He began working in the art trade in the mid-1970s, first with Persian rugs and later with antiques, while travels to Iran and a visit to Persepolis sparked his lasting interest in antiquity. After studies in Copenhagen and London, he worked in England with a dealer in early furniture, before travelling widely in Latin America and Asia, deepening his knowledge of regional art and culture. In 1984 Ruben opened a gallery in Copenhagen dealing in Asian antiquities. He was later active in London and, in the early 2000s, operated the Brussels gallery Classic Art. Much of his career, however, has been conducted privately from home, selling by appointment to collectors, galleries, and museums. Ruben has always bought selectively, choosing only works that deeply engaged him, and often keeping them for many years until placing them with a collector he felt truly understood them.

Condition: Wear and manufacturing irregularities, obvious losses to the seat, tiny nicks, age cracks, rust to the metal.

Weight: 1,031 g
Dimensions: Size ca. 27 x 31 x 35.5 cm

Simple in design and compact in form, folding stools were a practical alternative for seating when traveling or hunting. First introduced by nomadic tribes of the Northern and Western regions during the Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), folding stools have X-frame round-section legs joined by metal pivot pins, secured into flat feet and seat rails at the bottom and top, respectively. A Ming-dynasty 16th-century woodblock illustration of Qiu Hua Lienu Zhaun (The Stories of Upright Woman) depicts a servant carrying a similar folding stool while accompanying a rider on horseback.
