A HUANGHUALI WAISTED CORNER-LEG RECTANGULAR STAND WITH GIANT ARM BRACES, BANZHUO
Qing dynasty, 19th century
A huanghuali stand of rectangular shape with typical mitred, mortice and tenon top with a two-plank center panel supported by three dovetailed transverse stretchers underneath, with the middle one hidden tenoned into the long rails and the other two exposed. The edge of the mitred frame molds downwards. The one-piece waisted apron finished with a concave-sectioned beaded edge that continues down the legs, which terminate in well drawn hoof feet. The round-sectioned giant arm braces reach up from the square-sectioned legs to reinforce the tabletop.

The dimensions and basic form of the present table closely resemble those of the rarely seen rectangular incense stand, except that the present lot is constructed with S-shaped braces. See an example of the stand in Grace Wu Bruce, A Choice Collection: Chinese Ming Furniture (Hong Kong: Grace Wu Bruce Co. Ltd., 2011), pp. 46-49. A similar design to the present table can be found in the slightly longer side table, tiaozhuo, see a zitan table in Mimi and Raymond Hung et. al., Chinese Furniture: One Hundred Examples from the Mimi and Raymond Hung Collection (New York, 1996), no. 59, pp. 160-161.
