Kolonisatie van Europeanen te Suriname; opheffing van het pauperisme, ontwikkeling van handel en industrie. A. HALBERSTADT. Leiden, 1870. XI, 130 p. , 49 pp. pl Halberstadt worked as an official in the colony of Suriname in the mid-nineteenth century for more than twenty years. He was very critical of the colonial government. As Multatuli did in that other Dutch colony, now Indonesia. Everyone knows Ed. Douwes Dekker the author of Max Havelaar. But who heard of Halberstadt? He lost his job and the authorities tried to make sure he would never find one again. Privately he published this book and apparently only one hundred copies were made. Only a few copies are located in libraries, some in private collections. Some say that the Dutch government also played a role in this. Forbidden books are always interesting for historians and book collectors. Halberstadt used the plates of Benoits Voyage a Suriname (1839) . In his book we find about 90 plates from Benoit. Halberstadt's book, however, is many times more rare than Benoit's book. The book is complete. The band lets loose and therefore requires some attention. The prints are all in very good condition. Rare
