A Huali Luohan Chuang Day-Bed

Ming Dynasty, 17th Century

Flat without sides, cane seat, shaped, beaded and carved apron and cabriolet legs The removable back and arms constructed with double-mitred and mortised small members forming a lattice pattern, slotting into a standard mitre, mortise and tenon construction frame surrounding a two-board, floating panel with exceptionally rare “ghost faces” in the grain, the bed supported by five transverse braces mortised and tenoned into the long members of the frame, above a recessed waist above a convex apron supported by peaked bulging legs terminating in horse-hoofed feet.

H. 高 : 18 ⅝” (47 cm), W. 長 : 85 ⅝” (217.5 cm), D. 寬 : 34 ¾” (88 cm)

Provenance: North Shore Long Island Collection;
Condition: Condition: A small section of the bottom of three of the feet were replaced at some earlier point, approximately 7/8 in.; 1 in., and 1 1/4 in.; some light abrasions and scratches commensurate with age.
