LOT 55

A Jimmy Stewart Gibson "Johnny Smith" 25th Anniversary edition guitar

[ translate ]

Serial #82565502, sunburst finish, with case; wanting pick guard and single neck position mini-humbucker pickup.
Provenance: from the estate of guitarist Jimmy Stewart (1937-2018).

Gibson's Johnny Smith model was, in 1961, one of the first guitars to combine a high-quality carved acoustic body with a high quality pickup for amplification. Based on jazz guitar-great Johnny Smith's 17-inch D'Angelico New Yorker Special, it was one of the most expensive and deluxe guitars in the Gibson catalogue. The 25th Anniversary model replicates the original 1961 model and even was individually tuned and tested before it left the factory as documented on a signed and dated label inside the f-hole. Stewart's estate tells us that this guitar was often used in performance and on recordings, particularly for Stewart's partnerships with Gabor Szabo.
