A KARACHOPT KAZAK RUG, WEST CAUCASUS

third quarter 19th century

approximately 192 by 138cm; 6ft. 4in., 4ft. 6in.

Condition Report:
Lustrous wool with variable pile 1cm plus in depth in borders and sides of field, reducing to 5-7mm in main part of field and with localized wear where knot bars are visible in a band across the centre of the medallion and in the upper part of the field again in the centre. Another area of lower pile on the central axis beneath the central square panel with knot tails of about 2-3mm. Coppery brick red wefts and side cords. Side cords appear to be original. Ends with trimmed warp fringes and overlocked to stabilize. Dark and walnut browns variously oxidized. Very pretty colour – really sparkles.
