A KHAMSEH 'CHICKEN-DESIGN' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1870
A KHAMSEH 'CHICKEN-DESIGN' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1870
“The main field contains three vertical rows of lozenges, 2 x 5 outer rows, 1 x 4 inner row. There are three pairs of chickens in each lozenge arranged on either side of florally-decorated vertical poles. The long necks of the chickens may indicate an early example. Lozenge ground colours are alternating blue and ivory (outer rows) and red and ivory (inner rows). Further chickens, S-shapes, rosettes and stalked flowers are located in the dark-blue field surrounding the lozenges. Ivory inward facing modified triangular hooked forms or rosettes line the edges of the central field. Borders are typically Khamseh of the ‘senneh’ yellow-ground type or with flower and leaf meanders. The rug has the usual checkerboard ends. The structure is formed of symmetrical knots, the warps are in undyed wool, wefts are red-dyed with two shoots.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 42). Approximately 223 x 154cm
