A KHAMSEH 'CHICKEN' SINGLE BAG FACE, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1875

“Two pairs of confronting red birds lie above and below a small central medallion that has ivory poles terminating in outward pointing arrows. An endless knot rosette fills the medallion. The edges of the main field are bounded by prominent SW Persian triangular-hooked forms in alternating ivory and red. There is an inner border with small variably coloured botehs on a red ground, and an outer border with alternating bird and tree forms on an ivory ground. Guards are formed of reciprocal triangles in red and green or alternating bands in the same colours. The slit panels are in chevron pattern twill, the colours varying from panel to panel. The top and bottom ends of the bag are finished in a single or double rows of red and green twining. The sides of the bag have a single cord overcast in wide bands of blue and red. The pile is in asymmetrical knots, open to the left, the warps in natural ivory and brown, the wefts in light brown, dark brown and some red, in two shoots. The back of the bag face is missing.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.100). Approximately 69 x 61cm

The Collection of Professor Paul R Benjamin

LITERATURE:

Benjamin, Paul, South Persian Rugs, Bags and Saddle Covers: from the collection of Paul R Benjamin, 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 100-101

“Bird bags of this type are well known in the literature (eg plate 39, in Woven Gardens ed. by Black, D. and Loveless, C., David Black Carpets, London, 1979) but this one has a particularly attractive brick-red colour. It was originally one of a pair.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.100)
