A KHAMSEH 'LATTICE DESIGN' SADDLE COVER, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
A KHAMSEH 'LATTICE DESIGN' SADDLE COVER, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
“A small-scale lattice design contains simple red or white botehs that lie within a mithrabic dark-blue field. There is a joined crescent-shaped mantle slit filled with a blue meander border (partly replaced). Red ground spandrels contain bilateral symmetrical bird, rosette, leaf and small diamond-shaped forms. The main border is of the Senneh type but in this example it has a red rather than yellow ground. The minor border has the usual red flower meander on a blue ground matching that of the mantle slit. The ends are missing. The saddle cover is woven in symmetrical knots, with warps in grey/brown pigmented wool and wefts in madder dyed wool with two shoots.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 52). Approximately 74 x 70cm
