A KHAMSEH 'MEDALLION' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1880
A KHAMSEH 'MEDALLION' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1880
“The design is dominated by a single large quatrefoil medallion, with pendants, containing geometrical multicoloured flowers and smaller floral and leaf forms on a dark blue ground. The medallion is surrounded by similar flower and leaf designs on an ivory field. There are characteristic corner spandrels with ‘cloudbands’ in mustard and light blue on a light brown ground. The main border is formed of one-way stem cups alternating with rosettes. Knots are symmetrical, warps in undyed wool, wefts two shoots in red-dyed wool. The ends are formed of a few rows of kelim flat weave, probably not original.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 38). Approximately 193 x 146cm
The Collection of Professor Paul R Benjamin
