A KHAMSEH 'STRIPED' HORSE COVER, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1880
“This is an unusually-shaped piece with a striped-shawl design in alternating blue and ivory. The main border is formed of a trellis-pattern and vine meander on a blue ground. Minor borders are filled with a variety of small geometric shapes. The central piled area is surrounded by a brown kelim border, lateral edges 5 cm wide, joined to a narrow strip of similar kelim weave at both ends. These edges are decorated with rows of countered weft twining. The sides are over-cast in brown wool. Knotting is asymmetrical, open to the right. The warps are in undyed ivory wool with some mixed brown, wefts in brown wool.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 54). Approximately 78 x 83cm
