KWELE SYMMETRICAL HORNED MASK,
wood, clay, lozenge shaped central face flanked by joining horns, clay applied to outer portion of horns and lower face, sloping eye slits, cross shaped scarification to cheeks, represents forest spirits for use in rites of passage, mid 20th century 43cm (provenance: bought directly from the carver, gabon, 1930)
Note: A similar example from the Rockefeller Collection is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Accession No 1979.206.8 and another was sold by Sotheby’s Paris on 14/12/2016 [Lot 11].

Provenance: Collection of Julien Harris (1910-2011) - see lot 1066.
