Watercolour on strong paper, framed with a mat in a wooden frame gilded with gold leaf. The set is in good condition. Note two small folds (not visible when hung on the wall) at the top in the sky. The watercolour dates from early 20th century while the frame is from mid 19th century. Signature at the bottom left: A. Korakoff. ‘Le Bosphore avec Constantinople au lever du soleil’ Very pretty watercolour with a lot of details and finesse. Watercolour size: 41. 5 x 28 cm. Frame size: 70 x 53 cm Alexandra Korsakova-Galston was a Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s great-great-niece, the famous Russian composer. She spent her childhood in China, where her father was a doctor in a Russian embassy. During the Boxer Rebellion, Russian Embassy staff sought refuge at the British Embassy, where Alexandra, who was 16, was treating the wounded along with her father. Nicholas II awarded her the Medal of Courage and the Red Cross for nursing. In 1905, Galston moved to Munich, where she studied art. She was back to Moscow in 1910. There, she studied painting with Ilya Mashkov and Nicholas Roerich. After her immigration to the United States, she became dean of the St. Louis Institute of Music.
