A Kufic Qur'an folio

Near East or North Africa, 9th/10th century

Comprising Qur'an XXX (sura al-rum), v.41 (part)-43 (part), Arabic manuscript on vellum, 10ll. of brown kufic script, red, vocalizations in green and yellow, polychrome roundels verses markers, lightly stained and pitted to the edges, inventory number penciled to the reverse

19.5 x 30.2cm.

Provenance :

UK Private Collection, since the 1970’s
Christie's South Kensington, 23/04/2012, Lot 107 (part)

Condition Report:

This folio is trimmed. The corners are scuffed and the edges acceptably strong but bearing irregular marks of trimming. The edges are stained. On the side where the binding stitches/stitch holes would have been the edge remains rougher. The folio shows some marked creased and some undulations. It has browned overall. The folio is lightly potted overall. The lower area is noticeably more stained than the upper section of this lot. When held against the light the folio reveal near translucent area as if it would have been scrapped more thoroughly on approximately 5 x 4cm. Overall the red and green markings remain much stronger than the black ink which turned either in an attractive dark sepia or has faded altogether. This might suggest those green and red are later additions.

Hair side :

The ink is strong showing a darker sepia tone, as may be expected for such works of the period. The ink has rubbed off and cracked in places. This is most noticeable in the long vertical strokes and cursive letter located in the right part of the text. The various marks in green and red are stronger. the green has not corroded or dulled.

Flesh side :

The ink is very weak overall. The text has faded and in certain areas, is barely visible. The red and green markers remained strong. The green has not corroded or dulled. The staining located in the marginal part of the folio is more visible on this side of the work. An inventory number in modern hand has been added in pencil tot he lower right corner
