A LAKAI SUZANI, UZBEKISTAN, MID 19TH CENTURY
Silk embroidered on a light orange cotton ground, this very rare suzani by the Lakai tribe presents a strikingly expressive design. In the field, highly diverse boteh variations, flute-shaped and circular blossoms as well as twigs spiralling inwards have been arranged around a small star-shaped medallion in a seemingly spontaneous manner. The giant palmettes with long tentacle-like arms seen in the wide border are particularly arresting. With inscription on the bottom of cut-out floral motifs.
