A LARGE CENTENNIAL PERIOD CARVED AND GILDED WOOD EAGLE

The large and impressive spread wing eagle is carved with great symmetry and detail, in classic form, looking down to the left and clutching a bundle of arrows. The outsized work is carved from interlocking pieces of wood joined to create a massive single block carved, gessoed, coated with red bole, and then water gilded to the rich, reflective luster seen here.

The dramatic positioning of the figure, the carver's high level of skill, the scale of the work, the complexity of feather detail, and the outstanding condition of this piece make it an important specimen.

The appearance of patriotic motifs like this saw dramatic revival in the years leading up to America's centennial of 1876, the period of this carving.
