A LARGE FINE RUSSIAN ICON, PALEKH CIRCA 1890. Comprising a large and finely painted icon of selected saints beneath an image of the Fiery Ascension of the Holy Prophet Elijah, Moscow workshop circle of Dikarev. Depicting eight individual finely painted figures. Each identified with corresponding inscription within their haloes from left to right they are: the Venerable Ksenia, the Holy Apostle John, Basil the Great, the Guardian Angel, Saint Nicholas, Saint Ekaterina (Catherine), the Holy Venerable Euphrosyne and the Holy Alexi Metropolitan of Moscow and at top center within an arched reserved, a finely painted image of the Fiery Ascension of the Holy Prophet Elijah. The overall quality of the icon is very high, especially the vestments which are embellished with gemstones and chrysography and is executed on a finely crafted wood panel with slats (shponki) inserted both horizontally on the verso and on the top and bottom edge. In a very good state of preservation. 17.5 inches x 14.75 inches (44.5 x 37.5 cm).
