A LARGE HISPANO-MORESQUE COPPER LUSTRE POTTERY DISH WITH PSEUDO-CALLIGRAPHY
Post-Nasrid Spain, 19th century
Of shallow rounded shape, resting on a flat base, with an everted flattened rim, the earthenware body painted in copper lustre and cobalt blue, the decoration to the interior consisting of a cross in the centre filled with pseudo-Arabic calligraphy, possibly the Nasrid motto La Ghaliba Illa Allah, against vegetal sprays, in the four corners Western-inspired leaves and vegetal trellis against a dotted ground, the cavetto with continuous scrollwork, the rim with solid copper lustre edge and cobalt blue-painted pomegranate sprays, the exterior with concentric fretwork bands, 38.5cm diam.
