A LARGE KASHMIRI LAQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PENBOX (QALAMDAN)
Srinagar or the Kashmiri valley, Indian subcontinent, 19th century

Large lacquered box with cover and tray, of rectangular, bulging form with chamfered corners, the interior fitted with compartments and two drawers, painted with stylized vegetal motifs against red and green grounds, the exterior densely painted with a profusion (hazara) of gul (flowers) and gulzar (flowering garden) motifs, together with boteh leaves, against a gilded ground with floral sprays.

11.5cm x 45cm x 19cm

The traditional Kashmiri papier-mâché technique involves applying softened paper in successive layers over a mould, with repeated drying and re-layering until the desired shape and thickness are achieved. The surface is then covered with muslin and a plaster-like coating, smoothed and prepared with a ground colour (zamin). The decoration is painted in watercolours and finally protected with a transparent varnish, traditionally made from copal dissolved in turpentine.
