A LARGE PALE AND EMERALD GREEN JADEITE CARVING OF TWO MANDARIN DUCKS, FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY

China. Finely carved as two confronting ducks, each holding a lotus sprig in its beak. Their well detailed heads, wings, and bodies are neatly incised with archaistic scroll accents. The translucent stone of a pale and emerald-green tone with russet veins and patches.

Provenance: From a British private collection. The wood base with a collector's number '815'.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into minor hairlines. The wood base with natural age cracks and light surface scratches.

Weight: 928.1 g (excl. base), 1,04.9 g (incl. base)
Dimensions: Length 19.9 cm

With an associated wood base intricately carved in openwork with a network of lingzhi sprigs. (2)

Mandarin ducks are a potent love charm, the lotus flower is also an auspicious incorporation to this symbolism. In Chinese tradition, the lotus flower has the capability to transform bad luck into that which is good, as well as bring you a greater sense of harmony and happiness. Thus, this carving embodies a wish for a happy and fulfilled marriage.
