A LARGE SILVER INLAID BRONZE WATER CIRCULAR BASIN
China, late Warring States period–early Western Han dynasty

Of circular shape, the large tray has a flat base, slightly inclined walls and a short rim, to the center of the bottom, inside the wall and on the outside of the rim a very refined silver agemina decoration with stylized geometric and floral motifs.

41 cm diameter

Provenance : Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired from a private collector in Bruxelles between 1995 and 2000.
The shape, the themes and the layout of the decoration of this basin closely resemble the characteristics of the production of lacquers between the end of the Warring States Period and the first part of the Western Han dynasty, as exemplified in the artefacts found in 1971 in the site of Mawangdui near Changsha, Hunan province, dating back to the first half of the 2nd century B.C.. Water basins of similar shape are also known in bronze (see the items in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, inv. 12.37.146 ).
