*§A LARGE SQUARE MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID ‘PRUNUS AND CRESCENT MOON’ TRAY
China, Late Yuan to Ming Dynasty
The low, rounded sides joined by canted incurved corners and set over one continuous foot, covered overall in glossy black lacquer inlaid with mother-of-pearl designs, the central surface with a blossoming prunus tree, its thick trunk issuing lean branches of new growth laden with emergent buds and flowers, the longest branches sweeping upward toward the crescent moon above, the interior sides with scrolling chrysanthemum.
Side: 35,3 cm
Provenance (according to the seller): Bought in 2003 from the closing sale of Charlotte Horstmann & Gerald Godfrey Ltd., Hong Kong, China.
