A LARGE VICTORIAN SILVER TROPHY CUP, by Martin, Hall & Co, Sheffield 1861, of baluster form with spreading foot and two foliate-cast scroll handles, heavily chased with cattle, man and dog in a rural landscape with a country house in the background, presentation engraving dated 1862, raised on an ebonised plinth. Trophy 27cm high, 22.9 troy ounces The engraving reads: Presented by Sir George Orby Wombwell Bart. To Mr Robert Wedgewood For the best managed Farm on the Newburgh Estates in the Year 1862 for less than 150 acres. As awarded by the Judges Mess'rs Jordan Appleyard & Pearson 19th August 1862. Note: Sir George Orby Wombwell was one of the youngest officers to take part in the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, where under rank of "Cornet" he was aide-de-camp to Lord Cardigan. Sir George retired as lieutenant in 1855, when he inherited his title and estate, Newburgh Priory in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, on the death of his father. He presented this trophy to one of his tenant farmers in his capacity of Lord of the Manor. When he died in 1913, he was the last surviving officer to take part in the Charge of The Light Brigade.
