A LARGE & EXCEPTIONAL RUSSIAN ICON PALEKH 19TH C. Comprising a large and finely painted icon of The Assembly of the Archangel Michael. At center a disk bearing the image of Christ Immanuel is held by the Archangel Gabriel and Uriel. At top center the Archangel Michael (Mikhail) holds two seals with the abbreviated (Greek) name of Jesus Christ (IC XC). The other archangels are identified with inscriptions in their haloes and beneath them stylized color shaded clouds typical of Moscow workshops by Palekh trained artists. The upper border with extensive condensed gilt inscription reading, SOBOR STAGO ARKHISTRATIGA MIKHAILA I PROCHI NBNUI SIL - The Assembly of the Holy General Michael and the Other Heavenly Powers. Exceptional detail and extensive use of chrysography. 17.5 inches x 14 inches (44.5 x 35.5 cm).
