The crown with crescent and star was the emblem of the Khedives of Egypt. The title Khedive (Persian/Turkish for “lord” or “viceroy”) was used in the 19th and early 20th centuries by the Khedives of the dynasty founded by Muhammad Ali Pasha. The crowned monogram on the present watch most likely refers to Abbas Hilmi II (18741-944), the last Khedive, who ruled from 1892 to 1914. He was deposed by the British in 1914, when they declared Egypt a protectorate when the Ottoman Empire entered the war. The title was subsequently changed to “Sultan.” Abbas went into exile, spending most of it in Switzerland. He died on December 21, 1944 in Geneva.A L’Emeraude SA is a renowned and long-established watch retailer in Lausanne, specializing in fine watchmaking and luxury timepieces.
