Originating during the Thirty Year’s War, the motto Ultima Ratio, refers to the solemnity of declaring war. In France, it was first used under the reign of Louis XIV, who had Ultima Ratio Regum, or last argument of kings, cast on the cannons of his armies. The term was further adapted in the subsequent centuries into Ultima Ratio Tribuni, essentially meaning 'last argument of the people', and was used by French, American and Swedish armies.
