A LOUIS XV SATINWOOD, KINGWOOD, TULIPWOOD, PARQUETRY AND ORMOLU-MOUNTED TABLE À ÉCRIRE D'EPOQUE, MID 18TH CENTURY, BY CLAUDE-CHARLES SAUNIER the top inlaid with geometric design and banded outset corners above two flush frieze drawers, on banded tapering cabriole legs and sabots, stamped underneath 'C.C. Saunier' and 'JME'. 85 cm wide, 47cm deep, 74cm high Claude-Charles Saunier (1735-1807) was a leading Parisian ébéniste and furniture maker of the late-eighteenth century. Saunier trained and worked under his father at the Saunier atelier in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. In 1752, he registered his maître ébéniste, before taking over the atelier from his father in 1765. Saunier was commissioned by many notable private clients as well as the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre and Martin-Eloi Lignereux. Daguerre was the leading Parisian dealer of the time, supplying furniture to the French royal family and many English collectors. Saunier’s regular use of carefully selected veneers, marquetry, geometric patterns, high quality ormolu mounts and decorative motifs distinguish his work as exemplificatory of neoclassical craftsmanship, though his oeuvre demonstrates his engagement with, and expertise in, a number of other styles throughout his career, including the Louis XVI, Transitional, and Directoire Styles.
