A LURI 'MEDALLION. SINGLE BAG (CHANTEH), SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900

“The main field is filled with a single diamond-shaped hooked medallion on an indigo ground. A single border is made up of squares, divided into quarters, linked by diagonal leaf shapes on a natural ivory wool background. The knots are symmetrical with warps and wefts in natural ivory-coloured wool. Wefts are in two shoots. The closure region of the bag has slit panels in weft-float brocading in an opposed tuning fork pattern. There is a diamond-in-square band of decoration in weft float brocading with guards in two-colour weft twining. A similarly designed band of weft-float brocading is located at the bottom of the face and links the front and back of the bag. Each side of the bag is overcast separately and then sewed together. The ends of the bag in tabby weave are folded over and hemmed. The back of the bag is in horizontal bands of kelim in various colours giving a pleasing appearance. There are several rows of weft twining from which emerge plaited loops opposite to the slits on the front surface of the bag. The remains of another plaited loop, with a multicoloured core continuous with the weft twining, is located on the outer edge of the bag. Finally, there is a third row of weft float brocading adjacent to the end of the bag in the same diamond-on-square pattern.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.118). Approximately 25 x 26cm
