A LURI WEFT-BROCADED STORAGE BAG (CHUVAL), SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
A LURI WEFT-BROCADED STORAGE BAG (CHUVAL), SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
“This piece was originally folded in the vertical plane and stitched at the edges to form a single bag. The faces are decorated by vertical rows of diamond-shaped rosettes in various colours, alternating with rows of small ‘triangular’ shapes with upward and downward facing ‘limb forms’. These decorations are woven in irregular weft brocading on a white cotton weft-faced plain-weave kelim ground, as is the single border that has a typical Luri zig-zag pattern. Guards are formed of two rows of alternating green and red bands or small flowers, again in weft brocading. Selvedges are in cotton, perhaps originally overcast in goat hair, as are the remaining starts and finishes.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.116). Approximately 42 x 58cm
The Collection of Professor Paul R Benjamin

“This bag has been opened. It was probably a small storage bag or chuval. The colours are now somewhat muted but they are still attractive in this obviously well-used bag.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.116)
