A Lacquer Ryoshibako (Document Box)
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
The rectangular box with fundame edges lacquered in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi maki-e, nashiji, clear lacquer to emphasize the grain of the wood, gold leaf, and shells depicting a scene of Wakanoura, a place on the mainland of Japan traditionally revered for its scenic beauty: numerous cranes fly about and stand along the shore and in the water among water plants and grasses, some of the wings of the birds accented with gold foil
The interior and bottom of the box decorated with nashiji throughout, the underside of the lid adorned with five small shells adhered to the surface, containing a removable fitted tray
